Stephen King + Audiobook = The Only Way I'm Able to Drive Any More

Under the Dome, Joyland, and currently Dr. Sleep--I love this man. I love his writing. I love the people who read his books and give them a much better voice than I'm capable of, I'm sure of it.

I tried reading Under the Dome the old-fashioned way, and I couldn't do it. I got bored. I got lost. I got bogged down in all the characters. But pop in those discs and let them serenade my many many many long trips I've been making lately and I am suddenly all up in it. I had been watching the TV show somewhat, and I don't think I can go back, honestly. The stories are too different. The characters are mostly nothing alike. I think I prefer the book--except for Junior. Book Junior is balls to the wall crazy where TV Junior is dreamy and after his first few episodes of crazy has turned into a likable character.

One thing about King that still bugs me, though--the repetition. I think it's been close to 10 years since I read the article that mentioned how much he repeats himself, but I've NEVER forgotten it, and every King book I read I look for it. I wish I could stop, I do.

Now 11/22/63 I actually read, in book form, like I'm Amish or something. As always, freaking good. I think I cried at a few parts.

I've attempted to read A Confederacy of Dunces, because I like to be a part of as many "cult" pop culture followings as possible (it gives me a false sense of belonging). Can't do it. It's supposed to be funny, but I can't not hate the main character. He's a slob, and he's self-centered, and I can't get past it.

OOHH also about Dr. Sleep--I've just started it, but already it's had me making faces and gasping aloud in my car. Joyland, the Dome, and 11/22/63 weren't horror, they were big on mystery. But Dr. Sleep is gruesome right out of the gate. I love it.
